Summoning Dolphins - Part 1 of 19

SUMMONING DOLPHINS
by
Jodi Davis

FADE IN:

EXT. SAN DIEGO HARBOR - NIGHT (2000)

Two RIBs (Ribbed Inflatable Boats) anchored together.

One boat holds Lieutenant Corporal DAVID ALEXANDER (32), an attractive chiseled man, a Navy SEAL.
Beside David is a large blue gym mat, the ends bent up to form a triangle.

David opens a flap of the tented mat and adjusts a hose that streams water onto an ATLANTIC BOTTLENOSE
DOLPHIN, BETTY.

DAVID
How ya doin Betty?

A stream of WHISTLES and CLICKS -- Betty is doing just fine.

The boat next door holds another Navy SEAL, Petty Officer GUY PHEARSON (28), and a sea lion, BAILEY.

Bailey looks around, CHATTERS, buries her face in Guy's chest.

Guy attaches a harness around Bailey's torso, prying the sea lion away from him, asserting some control over her.

GUY
That's a good girl, Bailey,
work time.

Guy slips Bailey a fish.

GUY
How'd I get a sea lion?
I wanted a dolphin.

DAVID
Double-check the harness.
You're making her crazy.

Bailey burps in Guy's face.

GUY
Fish breath. I'm transferring
out, man. I want to work with humans.

DAVID
What am I? Chopped liver?

GUY
Chopped fish, half fish, that's
what you are. Bailey, look.

Bailey's attention is finally on Guy.

Guy flips open the small pack on her chest, checks the EXPLOSIVE, closes it.

GUY
Focus. Go.

Accompanying words with hand signs, Guy releases Bailey.

Bailey slips over the side with a small splash.

Guy picks up a small control panel and uses a dial on it to increase volume and frequency of a HIGH-PITCHED BEEP.

On the boat console, a sonar sweep shows a small green, fast moving blip, Bailey. At the edge of the screen is a larger stable blip.

Bailey moves closer to the stable blip, Guy turns a knob, increasing the frequency of the beeping.

A blip about the same size as Bailey's moves into the sonar screen - Bailey's blip swerves and turns back to Guy.

DAVID
Damn, must be a shark.

Guy decreases the frequency, but Bailey continues her streak home.

GUY
You chicken bitch!
Turn around!

The frightened sea lion launches herself into the boat, pressing the trigger that arms the bomb against Guy.

DAVID
Armed, she's armed!

The control clatters to the floor of the boat.

Guy shoves Bailey away.

Bailey launches herself at Guy, knocking him back and over, ON TOP OF THE CONTROL.

The bomb EXPLODES, killing Bailey and Guy instantly.

Shrapnel hits David, knocking him onto the blue mat.

Then the shock wave hits, tilting the boat and sliding David, Betty, and the mat into the water.

UNDERWATER

David sinks slowly. Blood oozes in a cloud around him.

Betty rises beneath David and together they rise toward the surface.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM, MERCY HOSPITAL, SAN DIEGO - DAY (2000)

A steely eyed, leather faced man in full Navy regalia slams through the door, hat under one arm, Admiral
JAMES BENNETT(51).

David lies propped up in bed, his side and arm heavily bandaged.

David's instinct is to salute but that's the bandaged arm.

BENNETT
That's all right, son.
At ease.

DAVID
Thank you, sir.

BENNETT
I'm sorry about Phearson,
a horrible accident.

DAVID
Permission to speak freely, sir.

Bennett waits for it.

DAVID
Bailey wasn't ready, our reports
said she wasn't ready.

BENNETT
I have a picture in my wallet of
a dead service man. If he'd had
the aid of a biological weapons
system, he'd be alive now.

DAVID
Sir-- I have a picture in my head
of a dead service man, your biological
weapons system killed him.

BENNETT
I pushed too hard. To save lives.
You've applied for a transfer, but
I need you.

DAVID
The program is cancelled.

BENNETT
Officially cancelled. Completely
different.

INT. MERCY HOSPITAL, HALLWAY, SAN DIEGO - DAY(2000)

DR. SIMMS(40), a tall, nerdy, nervous man stands outside David's room waiting for Bennett.

SIMMS
Well?

They fall into step together.

BENNETT
He'll stay, what about her?

SIMMS
She's awake from her mystery coma
but claims not to remember anything.
I'm going to fly down to New Orleans
and get her transferred to a private
facility. We'll see what she does
and doesn't remember.

BENNETT
I need her.

Nice scene. Good mixture of emotions being stirred there - the early dialogue is definitely amusing which contrasts well with what comes next.
